DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The Duke athletic department has removed a photo from its website showing a women's lacrosse player dressed in blackface at a team Halloween party.

The team held the party and costume contest at head coach Kerstin Kimel's house. The junior class dressed as characters from "The Little Rascals" movie. One player painted her face black as part of her Buckwheat costume.

A picture of the woman and the team's six other juniors was posted last week. The picture was changed Monday.

Kimel says some of the costume choices were insensitive and inappropriate and the team members should have realized how the pictures would be viewed. The team and coaches apologized for the photo.

Duke assistant sports information director Leslie Gaber said neither Kimel nor the player had any comments.

@howaboutthat - You're comparing apples to oranges. Do some research. Nonetheless, the fact that the player painted her face black should be a non-story. It's all about context and what was described appeared harmless. Duke, understanding the historical significance of blackface and recognizing their place as an entity, did what is standard.

this is so stupid. I see Halloween masks of all kinds and some are characters of different past presidents. Those are WHITE! Ive seen some of obama. Those are BLACK! I LOVE the little rascals and if I had a group of people that wanted to dress in that theme, which by the way is a great idea!! I would most definetly have to have someone paint their face BLACK! Unless of course I ask one of my black friends to be Buckwheat! Oh wait, would that be racist???!! and again, may I say S-T-U-P-I-D!

I'm sorry if I psssss in someones wheaties here, but this is ridiculous..I guess if someone goes to a party dressed as George Washington Carver, they should not paint their face??? Buckwheat "was black", period. He was one of the most beloved characters of the gang and when all this PC BS stops, maybe "WE" can move forward as humanity..Just my opinion..
