The Hamilton County Prosecutor has filed charges against two women accused of drugging children in a Springfield Township day care center.

56 year old Pamela Hartley of Cleves and 41 year old Donna Scott of Cincinnati face misdemeanor charges in the incident last December at Springfield Township Covenant Apostolic Church Day Care in Finneytown.

Hartley and Scott are charged with 3 counts of misrepresentation by childcare provider and 3 counts of child endangering. If convicted of all charges, they face the possibility of 18 months in jail. These are the most serious charges applicable to these facts.

Hartley and Scott were day care workers at the church. Hartley was the director of the day care and Scott was the lead infant teacher. Neither defendant currently works at day care.

Today's charges allege that Hartley and Scott gave over-the-counter supplement Melatonin to children at the day care in order to make them sleep. Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control sleep and wake cycles. The Mayo Clinic says melatonin is not FDA approved or regulated and has side effects, including seizures in children ages one to five, as well as headaches, nausea fatigue and depression. Long term use is not recommended for children or adults.

The investigation into this matter began when a co-worker notified Springfield Township Police about Hartley and Scott giving the melatonin to the children.

Lakota, agreed, now when is Cincinnati Water Works (and all the other cities) going to eliminate FLUORIDE from the water supply, since we're all thinking about "the kids" and their safety and all...read a tube of toothpaste you smather into your children's mouths twice a day, READ the warning label if accidentally injested, FAR worse than melatonin, google "the fluoride deception" (a video and a book) and realize there are far bigger fish to fry, like elected leaders and those in charge of public health.

Its better than having to hear a child screaming and crying.

Lakota2 - 3/12/2010 5:44 PM
Regardless of the safety of melatonin, they had no right to administer it! PERIOD!

Myday, I do know my pharmacology, Melatonin is metabolized hepatically and has a half life of less than 1/2 hour, these children's pineal glands are putting out a constant daily stream of this hormone that sets the circadian rhythm of their sleep cycle, when I said "won't have an effect" I'm talking about an LD-50 event which if you'd bother to investigate is roughly 3grams per 1kg of body weight, in a 40lb child this means that 50% of 40lb children would die as a result of injesting 54,000mg (that's 54 GRAMS) and that is assuming that 100% of the melatonin was absorbed into the bloodstream without being deactivated by digestive enzymes and enzymes in the plasma of the bloodstream. Do you know what 54g's of melatonin even looks like? This might help...usually melatonin comes in 3mg pills, for a lethal dose of 50% of 40lb children, that's 18,000 (300 bottles of 60) pills at once they'd have to injest, kind of puts the sensationalism into perspective I hope. At no point did I say it was OK for the daycare workers to do this but I am going to point out that this "drug" (technically it is a hormone) at the dosages given were no cause for such sensationalism. It WILL be used as I pointed out to allow big pharma to step into legislative lobbying efforts to place these "drugs" (as everyone is being programmed now to believe) in their hands only....and Catmomx, if you believe giving children aspirin is ok, you might want to do a google search on "Reye's Syndrome", just FYI.

how stupid can a day care worker be. these people should be jailed, and the keys should be lost.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

darkprotoman - 3/11/2010 9:53 PM
Stop freaking out! None of the children had any health problems due to the drugs! You guys are as bad as when the weatherman predicts snow. People go to the grocery store and fight over the last gallon of milk!

This is why I am stay at home Mom. Stories like this make me sick to my stomach. I will never send my children to daycare.

Marcus is correct – what studies that have been done on melatonin indicate it is safer than aspirin. He is also correct concerning the pending danger of Codex Alimentarius. If I'm not mistaken, it is already in 'play' in Europe. 'Some' desire it to be in 'play' in America, as well. A couple of years ago I contacted my Congressmen regarding this issue. They replied that they were not aware of the issue. I furnished them with more info – and heard nothing more. Furthermore, Marcus is correct that some potentially troubling language is contained in the Court filing of this case. Specifically – defining melatonin as an “unlawful medication”. 'Some' may be surprised to learn that a variation of this legislation is already in force in California (okay ... its California – so maybe 'some' AREN'T surprised). Companies that sell specifically 'targeted' herbs online, are forbidden from selling (actually, shipping) 'said' herbs to residents of the State of California. Codex Alimentarius IS an issue to be seriously concerned about. Having said all that – clearly the issue in this 'case' SHOULD be that medication (any medication) may have been given to children without their parent's consent. If that is true – it is an unacceptable situation – not to mention, illegal.

Marcus, if Asprin is given to children while in the care of his/her PARENTS, I DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THAT! Normally, PARENTS are giving medication in concert with the child's Doctor. What these two women did is unconsciousable and they should be put on a long list of adults that should NEVER be able to CARE FOR ANY CHILD EVER AGAIN! Dag-on Marcus, these parents were NOT even TOLD their children had been "fed" DRUGS!!! Shameful!
