PLACE, La. (AP) - Scores of scores of buses, dozens of high-water vehicles and 50 boats have been evacuating at least 3,000 people in Louisiana's St. John the Baptist.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne says floodwaters caught everyone by surprise, rising "shockingly" fast as Tropical Storm Isaac pushed water from lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas into parts of LaPlace.

Rising water closed off all main thoroughfares into the parish, which is about 30 miles west of New Orleans. The water is being driven higher by south winds as Isaac passes to the west.

Dardenne says officials are speculating that when levees in other parishes along Lake Pontchartrain were fortified after Hurricane Katrina, it forced storm surge into areas that had escaped flooding in past storms.

"Pontchartrain", "Maurepas". Are all lakes in that area difficult to pronounce? Didn't they have a civil engineer to try to predict the effects of the fortified levees?

I disagree rosey, I believe the "means" were provided for all. Afterall, who would want to experience Katarina 2 on their watch on the anniversary?

JasperMom, I agree for the most part but many of these poor people had no means to leave!

If I was living somewhere that was below sea level (a fish bowl basically), and a hurricane...any strength...was headed that way, I wouldn't need to be told to leave/evacuate. It's well known what can, and will happen. People that don't take responsibility for their own safety, stay, and then then cry for help...I say sorry for your stupidity. All you are doing is making the situation worse, and putting other people's lives at risk (first responders) to help your sorry a$$.

Ammy, you are welcome but I believe it was more than merely an “attempt”. I felt the comment (“flaming liberal”) was unjustified. Although I appreciate that your sister and niece were there, MY INFORMATION is firsthand. As a visitor with a pass to travel freely throughout the Gulf States I was able to observe firsthand the recovery process. The facts I posted are all verifiable. Perhaps it would help if you stated what, specifically, I’ve stated that your sister or niece finds objectionable?

LOL, Jim Schu, thank you for the attempt to assist, however, my sister and neices were there...please, I would not have made note of the event if had not had some info from folks, I knew personally, who were onsite.

Spaulding, I don’t know that I would necessarily label Ammy a “flaming liberal”. She does post many valid comments and Bush is worthy of much criticism. I certainly would never defend the man EXCEPT in the instance of Katrina. I suspect Ammy has never heard the truth about Katrina. So let’s give it to her. Five states were devastated by Katrina and yet ONLY LOUISIANA suffered a myriad of problems and complications. Why is that? (I’ll ignore the fact that the people of New Orleans are overwhelming liberal). Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida all surrendered disaster management to FEMA (the four states that enjoyed quick and organized recovery). Governor Blanco (Louisiana) insisted on managing the disaster in her state with dire consequences. She proved to be clueless in this capacity and couldn’t even make a coherent request for aid from the federal government. Then there was Mayor Nagin (New Orleans) who ignored FEMA’s request to order an evacuation of the city days before Katrina made landfall. He also refused to stock the hospitals, nursing homes and shelters with food, generators, blankets and supplies. He refused to bus out the homeless and elderly. He did, FINALLY, order a mandatory evacuation HOURS before Katrina hit which just made matters worse, as people were caught unprotected on clogged highways during the onslaught of the storm! After the storm Nagin remained in his room high above the devastation and did nothing to restore communications with Blanco, the police or government agencies. The city (as well as the state) was effectively leaderless. His incompetence in this matter should be criminal. When criticized for these failures, President Bush pointed no fingers. He refused to blame these incompetent Democrats (Blanco and Nagin) as his party wanted him to. Instead he took full responsibility and said he would PERSONALLY get involved to find a solution. (A lesson Obama clearly has failed to learn).
