Deadly Bus Crash in Italy

Updated: Thursday, August 15 2013, 09:45 PM EDT
Investigators are on the scene of a deadly bus crash in italy that has left 38 people dead.
Italy's Prime Minister is calling it "a dramatic moment" for his entire country.

The bus smashed into cars, tore through a guardrail and plunged 100 feet into a ravine.

It all happened on a highway about 160 miles south of Rome.

Witnesses say the bus, carrying dozens of Italian tourists, was going at a normal speed when it suddenly swerved and started hitting into cars.

Some drivers say it sounded like the bus blew a tire.

Firefighters worked through the night to cut away wreckage from the mangled bus and freeing survivors.

Nearly a dozen people, including several children, are recovering in the hospital.

Emergency workers lined up bodies and coffins along the highway.

Relatives of the victims gathered at a school that has been turned into a temporary morgue.

Authorities say the bus driver is among the dead.

Prosecutors have ordered an autopsy - and are investigating the bus for technical trouble - to find out what may have caused the deadly crash.
