Ohio Legislator Proposes Pay Increase for Thanksgiving Workers

Updated: Tuesday, November 12 2013, 10:54 PM EST
COLUMBUS (WKEF) -- At least one state legislator is calling for a law requiring retailers to pay workers substantially more when they work on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

According to, Democratic Rep. Mike Foley of Cleveland said on Monday he is proposing legislation that would require triple pay for retail employees who work on Thanksgiving on until noon on Black Friday, the day following Thanksgiving.

Many retailers this year have announced plans to be open on Thanksgiving, a day on which stores traditionally had been closed. reports that Foley admits the plan likely will face Republican opposition.

Its a disturbing, creeping trend, reports Foley as saying. There are some days in the year where you should just be able to chill out and not have to worry about the whole consumeristic, commercial world.
