Driver Who Posted YouTube Confession Pleads Guilty

Updated: Wednesday, September 18 2013, 09:32 PM EDT
COLUMBUS, OH (WKRC) -- Matthew Cordle got the nation’s attention when he posted a video on YouTube admitting to causing a deadly drunk driving accident.

Wednesday he faced a judge in Columbus, Ohio.  Teresa Garcia reports on the plea he entered.

Matthew Cordle said in an Ohio courtroom what he had already said online.

That he is guilty of killing a man while driving drunk.

"Yes your honor," Cordle listened with red eyes as the prosecutor described how the defendant crashed into Vincent Canzani's car while driving the wrong way after a night of heavy drinking.

Cordle told the judge he had been drinking with friends before getting in his truck to drive home.

He first confessed to the crime earlier this month when he posted a three and a half minute video that went viral.

Days later the 22 year old turned himself in.

Some feel he made the online confession to get a lighter sentence.  The victim's daughter said the video has made it harder to move on.

But his attorney says Cordle wants to send a message about raising awareness about drinking and driving and more importantly to apologize to the Canzanis.

The judge scheduled sentencing for October 10th.

For the charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, Cordle faces up to eight years behind bars.
