Government Shutdown Day 14: Pantry Offers Food to Furloughed Workers

Updated: Monday, October 14 2013, 11:49 PM EDT
HUNTINGTOWN, Md. (WKRC) -- While politicians squabbled in Washington over the federal budget and the debt ceiling, some furloughed government workers are finding new ways to feed their families.

A food pantry in Maryland held a charity event just for furloughed workers.  Donations of canned goods and other packaged items were given to government workers who stood in line.  The pantry even attracted the attention of Maryland's Governor.

Governor Martin O'Malley (D) said, "It's a damn shame.  It's no fault of their own.  They find themselves in a position of having to come here for help.  But thank God and thank the goodness of Calvert County and Rev. Hahn's ministry that there are people who are willing to help."

Rob Braun talked to Sara Cook at the local Free Store Food Bank and she says they are not aware of any federal employees here who have asked for assistance but they are ready to help if needed.
