Ohio Senate Considers Pet Protection Orders

Updated: Thursday, October 24 2013, 08:42 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Restraining orders that Ohio judges issue to protect potential crime victims could soon be extended to keep pets safe.

State Senator Michael Skindell has presented a bill to the Senate Criminal Justice Committee asking for the change.  Skindell says many victims of domestic abuse are afraid to leave the house.  They fear the animals they leave behind will be harmed by the person ordered to stay away.

Skindell says 71% of pet-owning women who entered a domestic violence shelter reported their partner killed, harmed or threatened their animal.

Two dozen states already allow judges to extend restraining orders to cover pets.  Kentucky and Indiana do not. Ohio Senate Considers Pet Protection Orders
