Mayor John Cranley: We are going to have a streetcar

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 02:58 PM EST
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- "We're going to have a streetcar". Those words from Cincinnati mayor John Cranley as he announced, along with Kevin Flynn, that the project would move forward. However, Cranley is not happy about the move.

He said today that he still believes it is wrong and he will not sign the legislation. He says Cincinnati has a legislative form of government and it has spoken. "Like I tell my son, when you don't get your way you have to move on."

The pair also announced that the Haile Foundation will commit $900,000 a year for the next ten years. Cranley said that funding commitment is due to Flynn. Cranley thanked the Haile Foundation for being the only local organization to "put their money where their mouth is." He appreciates its willingness to lead by action.

However, Cranley had few kind words for SORTA. SORTA, which operates the Metro buses, promised to assume the operating costs for the streetcar. Cranley says he will try to make sure that the streetcar doesn't jeopardize basic services, including the buses. SORTA can't cut routes or drivers. He went on to say that Flynn and council member David Mann are more committed to the city's priorities than SORTA.

Flynn says his decision to support restarting the streetcar is not a vote against Cranley. He says Cranley helped to get him elected, and he believes they'll agree on many issues in the future. Flynn says the city has no choice but to make the streetcar successful and he's confident they'll be able to do so.

Cranley says it's time to move on and tackle other issues facing the city of Cincinnati. He and city council members will work to move Cincinnati forward. They want to reduce violence and homicides, expand the black and Latino middle class and make investments to move ahead.
