15 Yr-Old Davion Navar Henry Only Pleads For Family To Adopt Him At Church

Updated: Tuesday, October 22 2013, 12:34 PM EDT
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (CBS Tampa) -- Fifteen-year-old Davion Navar Henry Only grew tired of waiting for a foster family, so he took his case to church, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

During a Sunday service at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church last month, he sat patiently until he was introduced.

The preacher spoke about orphans and said there are an “alarming numbers of African-American children who need us.”

Then Davion got up to address the 300 or so people in the pews.

”My name is Davion and I’ve been in foster care since I was born … I know God hasn’t given up on me. So I’m not giving up either.”

”I’ll take anyone,” Davion added. “Old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple. I don’t care. And I would be really appreciative. The best I could be.”

Davion has had a troubled history, including poor grades, weight problems and temper tantrums.

But he recently found out his birth mother died and decided to change his life and search for a family to adopt him.

So he studied hard, brought his grades up, lost 40 pounds and brought his anger under control.

He knew to find a permanent family, he must work very hard.

Most recently, he’d been living at Eckerd’s Carlton Manor residential group home with 12 other teenage boys.

”He’s come a long way,” Floyd Watkins, program manager at Davion’s group home told the Tampa Bay Times. “He’s starting to put himself out there, which is hard when you’ve been rejected so many times.”

At the church, many were crying as Davion made his plea, says pastor Brian Brown.

The adoption agency has had several people ask about this brave young man, but so far no one has committed to taking him into their home.

But Davion is not ready to give up.

“I know they’re out there … maybe if someone hears my story.”
