mark the event, groups around the country meet from sunrise to sunset to raise
money and awareness for Alzheimer's.

Local 12's Tiffany Wilson shares
one local family's story.

"They made up their minds and they started

Listening to the lyrics of fastball's "The Way" ... it's not
obvious the song deals with Alzheimers. Fitting because the disease often
appears subtle at first. Sean Thompson's fingers know the songs melody and his
heart knows the hurt that comes from losing a loved one to Alzheimers.

"I lost both my grandparents on my mother's side and my uncle died just
recently of Alzheimers."

"It's a tough disease and it can be brutal to
see them go."

Today, with every strum of the guitar, every beat of the
drum, this group is working to find a cure to Alzheimers. Sean's wife, Amy,
organized the music marathon as part of "the longest day" with the Alzheimers

"My fingers hurt already from playing the bass. So, I know
that by the time 16 hours has worn on we're going to be very tired and I think
it gives you a sense of appreciation for what these people struggle with on a
daily basis."

Neighbors, family and friends all took time off to

"I don't play, I don't sing, but I thought I do cook, so I thought
I can do this, keep the band fed and maybe raise a little extra money with a
bake sale."

"Hopefully, with the help of fundraisers like this, we can
beat this terrible disease."

Team Thompson is one of more than 700
groups around the country participating in the longest day. not everyone is
singing, some are walking or playing bridge, but collectively they've raised
more than 640-thousand dollars.
