CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A political icon in the city of Cincinnati has died. William Mallory, Sr. passed away today at the age of 82.

William Mallory is the patriarch of family for whom public service is the family business, a family business that Mallory eyed first in his teens.

The website for the Cincinnati Historical Library says Mallory's first elected positions where as secretary of student government in high school and as president of the Ninth Street Hi Y
Club of the YMCA.

That was the beginning of a long and historic run in politics. Mallory was elected president of the West End Community Council in 1965. Just a year later, he was in the state house. Mallory was elected a state representative in 1966.  Eight years later, he was elected house leader, the first African American to be elected to that post . It's a position he would hold for 20 years, longer than anyone in Ohio history.

According to the Cincinnati Historical Society, while he served in the General Assembly, Mallory sponsored or co-sponsored over 600 pieces of legislation. That included legislation that created the first state-wide drug prevention program and helped to finance Riverfront Stadium.

In all, William Mallory, Sr. spent 28 years as a state representative, and you still see his influence on politics.     Mainly because four sons followed in his footsteps.    Son, Mark, literally. Mark Mallory was elected to his father's house seat when Mallory senior retired. Mark went on to serve in the state senate and eight years as mayor of Cincinnati.

Another son, William Jr., is a Hamilton County municipal court judge.  Son, Dwane, is also a Municipal Court Judge and son, Dale, is a state representative.

It all started with William Mallory, Sr, a man who found a lifelong interest in politics and turned it into a life of service.William Mallory, Senior has passed away
