Three Hurt in Explosion at Apartment

Updated: Monday, October 28 2013, 05:22 PM EDT
DRY RIDGE, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- An illegal drug operation at a Dry Ridge apartment complex results in an explosion that sends three people to the hospital.

Emergency crews responded to the building on McCoy road shortly after 11a.m. Monday.  Local 12's Joe Webb tells us what firefighters believe sparked the explosion.

The explosion this morning sent three Grant County men to the hospital who will likely face charges once they get out.

Zachary Kennedy, Jarrod Browning and Jeffery Combs are lucky to be alive.  So is the woman who lived in the apartment as well as her one year old son who was in the apartment at the time but not hurt.

Police say about 11a.m. Monday morning three men were using butane to extract hash oil from marijuana when one of them lit a cigarette.

The explosion knocked the building's walls off its foundation.  Flying glass stuck straight out in a nearby wooden fence.  The one year old's bedroom wall was blown out.  There is major structural damage but everyone survived.  Only the three in the bathroom were injured.

The three people were taken to the hospital, one of them by air care.

Dry Ridge police confiscated a couple of guns, and a few pounds of marijuana.

The butane process produces what is called, "butter," a 99 percent pure form of THC.  THC is the chemical in pot that gets people high.  It is not a new process but it's not common around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

The neighbors say they deal with drugs at the apartment complex all the time.  They don't like it and have complained to management but have to live with it.

Late Monday afternoon Dry Ridge Police said the three men will likely face charges of criminal mischief and wanton endangerment.  Five people have had to move because of this explosion.  The one apartment is trashed, the one above it is unstable.
