Violent Robbery Near UC Campus

Updated: Wednesday, October 30 2013, 12:26 AM EDT
CLIFTON, Ohio (Angenette Levy) -- A 22-year-old man was shot in the abdomen early Tuesday morning as a pair of robbers demanded belongings from him and his girlfriend, a student at the University of Cincinnati.

Austen Lampe and his girlfriend were walking home from a bar just after midnight when they saw two teens duck behind a building.

Lampe said they tried to avoid the pair as they walked down Warner St. but they approached and asked for directions. One then pulled a silver handgun. Lampe's girlfriend turned over her purse.

"We attempted to walk away. We were on a relatively busy street so we thought traffic would kind of stop any situation," Lampe said from his home Tuesday night.

Lampe said the accomplice did most of the talking while the gunman stood by.

"The accomplice kept saying things like get his wallet, get his phone, get her phone, things like that."

Lampe said as he grabbed his girlfriend to rush her across the street, the shooter pistol whipped him, leaving a cut and bruise behind his ear.

"From there there was a small grapple between the two of us before he took one or two steps back and fired one shot.  I didn't really know I was struck at first."

Lampe was fortunate the bullet did not hit any of his organs. He lifted his shirt to show the entrance and exit wounds.

"It came in right here right below my lowest rib and exited about a half inch above my belly button."

The robbers are described as African-American males.
Police describe the shooter as:
*18 to 20 years old
*Wearing a leather Red Sox jacket and blue jeans

The accomplice's description:
*16 to 18 years old
*Wearing a black vest with orange sleeves, dark jeans and a black hoodie

UC police interim chief Jeff Corcoran said there's been a decrease in the number of armed robberies near campus this year.

"What we've done this fall semester is in conjunction with Cincinnati, we're both putting a lot of extra officers out in the neighborhood around the campus," Corcoran said.

Corcoran advises people who are being robbed to give up their property so they're not harmed. He's also warning students and others to avoid walking on the streets late at night.

UC offers a free shuttle service called Night Ride. Students can arrange a ride by called 513.556.RIDE.

Lampe said police arrived quickly to the scene but the teens got away.

He's hoping the teens won't be on the loose for long.

"It's a shame that people can't walk five minutes down the street without being robbed or even worse, assaulted. So, I think these kids deserve whatever they have coming," Lampe said.
