Six Arrested in Murder Conspiracy Plot

Updated: Wednesday, October 30 2013, 10:18 PM EDT
COVINGTON, Ky. (Rich Jaffe) -- The community reaction to this crime has been nothing short of outrage.

But Covington residents turned that outrage into a force for justice that helped police catch the accused alleged killers of Desean Peterson.  All six of the young men were in court Wednesday, and Local 12  News reporter, Rich Jaffe, has the latest from the murder scene at 17th and Garrard.

Jack Ortego lives right next door to where Desean Peterson was shot Sunday evening.  His truck took a graze across the hood from one of the bullets which also shattered his mirror.

Ortego says, "I waited for the air to clear and I came out and by that time the victim was laying there. The police had arrived and they were putting him on the litter."

Desean Peterson, a well known former football player at Holmes High School, died a few hours after the shooting at University Hospital.

Police Chief Spike Jones tells Local 12 News, "Our community and that area specifically put its foot down and made us very aware of what they would tolerate and what they wouldn't tolerate. Shootings on the streets of Covington are absolutely intolerable, to the residents, the citizens that live here as well as the police department that serves this community."

As word spread of the drive by that killed the 19 year old tips to police came flooding in.

Commonwealth's Attorney, Rob Sanders, said, "The detectives here have worked literally around the clock.  I think at most they've gotten 3 or 4 hours of sleep.  Done dozens of interviews. The community has stepped up to the plate and done their part to participate and cooperate with the police.  I thank them and applaud them for that."

In court Wednesday five young men were all charged with complicity to commit murder:
Hassan Abdullah
Reginald Bates
Eugene Smith (Who was identified as the driver)
Two juveniles

Mikyle Holloway is facing charges of tampering with evidence charge.

Rob Sanders said, "Hopefully we will not have another of these for a good long time but it's good to know the public and the police department are both prepared to handle it accordingly if and when this does occur again."

Back on Garrard Street you get the reaction you might expect from Jack Ortego.

"Yes, I'm extremely happy.  I come out here with my dog and walk around all the time.  Last thing you want to see is a drive by...yes."

While this is still an ongoing investigation, police tell Rich Jaffe they believe that among those six young men, they do have the shooter.

According to the Commonwealth's Attorney there was only one gun used in the murder; however, he declined to say whether investigators have found the murder weapon.

They also say that more arrests are possible.
