Police: Robbery Motive in Double Shooting that Killed Woman

Updated: Wednesday, November 20 2013, 12:08 AM EST
NORWOOD, Ohio (Angenette Levy) -- A woman shot while sitting in her car with a friend has died turning the double shooting probe into a homicide investigation.

"There's a car that's pulled over that has a lady in it and she's bleeding," a man told a 911 dispatcher at 10:30 p.m. last Saturday.

When police arrived at 5220 Carthage Ave. they found Porshia Brooks, 20, shot in the driver's seat.

21-year-old Aron Martin was standing outside of the car covered in blood.

Brooks and Martin were parked in front of an apartment Aron was sharing with his brother. Several neighbors said they heard the gunshots but thought they might be firecrackers. One woman said she heard one gunshot and a second a couple of minutes later but when she looked outside she didn't seen anything suspicious.

Kristy Harper arrived home that night to find police swarming her street.

"My 13-year-old son heard the two gunshots as he was playing his game and he thought it was just his game because it was a new game. He thought it was real," said Kristy Harper, who lives on Carthage Ave.

Porshia Brooks's father, Thomas, said his daughter was a sweet girl who had just gotten her driver's license and a car. He said she loved animals, especially her dogs and pet rabbit. She worked at the Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa.

Police believe robbery was the motive but they will not say what was taken from the pair. They said drugs were not involved.

"Young kids, good hardworking kids. Good kids who were no trouble and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.  And as a result a young lady died and the other young man is fighting for his life," said Lt. Tom Williams of the Norwood Police Dept.

Aron Martin had been working at Busken Bakery in Hyde Park as an apprentice baker.

"He was just a good, all-around guy. He was well-liked by everybody.  He came in, did his work. He never left until everybody else left," said Leslie Stickrod, a co-worker of Martin's at Busken.

Martin remains in critical condition at UC Medical Center.  Neighbors on Carthage Ave. are saddened that something so awful could happen to two young people.

"A couple of people's lives at least are deeply affected. There's a young woman who's no longer around and that's a great tragedy," said Todd Long.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Norwood Police at 513.458.4520 or Crime Stoppers at 352-3040.Police: Robbery Motive in Double Shooting that Killed Woman
