Missouri Governor Denies Killer Clemency

Updated: Tuesday, November 19 2013, 12:43 AM EST

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A man convicted of killing two teenagers in Cincinnati in 1980 as part of a killing spree is set to be executed Wednesday in Missouri.

The governor of that state denied clemency for serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin, calling his sniper attack outside a St. Louis Synagogue cowardly and calculated. The killing of the St. Louis man is one of at least 20 murders Franklin confessed to committing from 1977 to 1980.

He traveled the country, leaving murder victims from Tennessee to Ohio and Utah to Wisconsin. Franklin says he was trying to start a race war, but his early killings were about religious intolerance.

Franklin is also the gunman who paralyzed Larry Flynt because of a Hustler magazine photo that featured a black woman. Flynt says he opposes the execution, because he wants Franklin to spend the rest of his life in prison. If Franklin is executed, it will be Missouri's first in three years.
