Schools hold classes on Memorial Day
KATY, Texas (Andrew Horansky/KHOU) -- At Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Memorial Day was a sensitive subject.
I think the board made a really bad choice, parent Patti Teague said.
Earlier this year, cold and icy weather forced entire school districts to close. Officials in districts, which include Houston, Fort Bend and Katy said they had little choice but to reschedule class on Memorial Day.
Our calendar was already set aside for it, and so we knew we had to stay designated for it, said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. We didnt want to play any games to try to change it around to avoid any controversy.
Yet the controversy came as expected, as a number of parents kept their kids at home on Monday.
I feel like a whole bunch of people probably had things planned for Memorial Day, high school student Robert Yanez said.
But some schools saw the day as a unique opportunity to teach.
At Mayde Creek Elementary in Katy, a small Memorial Day ceremony was held with students and teachers. Veterans at the event said it meant much more to them than another day off for students.
If they didnt have school, they wouldnt be here, said Capt. Gary Tover, US Navy (Ret). The children really need this. They need this education.
Officials have said they will consider steps so that Memorial Day is not considered among the possible make up days down the road.
