1902- James Cash Penney (J.C. Penney) opens his first retain store. It is called the Golden Rule Store.
1912- The Titanic hits an iceberg and begins to sink. 1,517 people die but more than 700 survive.
1941- Pete Rose is born.
1977- Sarah Michelle Geller, who played Buffy in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is born.
1989- Tom Petty releases his first solo album called "Full Moon Fever."
