Now that Mother's Day is behind us, and the weather is warmer, we're starting to see the home gardens take shape. You'll likely find tomato plants in many of them, but are they heirlooms? How about a new hybrid?
How many varieties of tomatoes exist?
The answer is: 3. 10,000
According to the website for Burpee Home Gardens, there are at least 10,000 varieties of tomatoes-- from the small cherry ones to a variety that can weigh more than three pounds. The website says tomatoes are the world's most popular fruit, with more than 60 million tons of tomatoes produced every year. According to Burpee, the tomato first grew as a cherry sized fruit in South America. The tomato that we're all familiar with today was developed in Mexico.
