Tomorrow is the Run for the Roses, the 140th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Today, though, is another prestigious race -- the Kentucky Oaks. The Oaks is just for three year old thoroughbred fillies. Fillies can run in the Derby, but there haven't been many filly winners.
How many fillies have won the Kentucky Derby?
The answer is: 1. three
The race at Churchill Downs today -- the Kentucky Oaks -- dates back to 1875, but it's just for three year old thoroughbred fillies. The females are allowed to race in the Kentucky Derby, but there have only been three fillies to win the Run for the Roses. That's according to the website for the Kentucky Derby Museum, which says the only filly winners are Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980 and Winning Colors in 1988. According to profiles of the thoroughbreds on bloodhorse.com, there are no fillies in this year's Kentucky Derby.
