An underwater explorer says he's confident that he's found the long lost remains of the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' flagship from his first voyage to the Americas.
How did remains of Santa Maria end up near present day Haiti?
1. wrecked on trip to Americas
2. beached there because of weather
3. Santa Maria crew tried to mutiny
The answer is: 1. wrecked on trip to Americas
According to history.com, on Christmas Eve in 1492, a cabin boy ran the Santa Maria into a coral reef near what is now Haiti. The crew spent the next few days unloading the Santa Maria's cargo and Christopher Columbus returned to Spain on the Nina. Nearly 40 crew members were left to start a settlement. When Columbus returned in the fall of 1493, history.com says he couldn't find any of his crew alive. On a happier note, CNN.com reports an underwater explorer, Barry Clifford, is convinced he's found the sunken wreck of the Santa Maria. If that turns out to be true, it would be a very important archaeological discovery.
