The answer is three - $450 million. According to history.com, producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown hired Steven Spielberg for "Jaws" before the release of the then-27-year-old director's first feature.
The shooting, off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, went much longer than scheduled, and the film's budget ballooned from four to eight million dollars.
And according to a 1982 article about Spielberg in "Time" magazine, executives at Universal even threatened to shut down production at one point and put Bruce, the mechanical shark used in the film, on display as part of its Universal City Tour.
