TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio coroner's investigator says a 3-day-old infant died hours after she was attacked by a family dog while sitting in a swing.

The investigator tells The Blade in Toledo the baby girl suffered head trauma at a home near Beaverdam in northern Allen County on Thursday evening. He says the attack apparently lasted only seconds.

He says the girl's parents were in a different room and said they didn't hear noises from the dog or the infant.

She was flown to a Toledo hospital, where she died. An autopsy was planned.

A sheriff's officer said the dog appeared to be a "pit bull" mix. It was put in the custody of the county dog warden.

How the hell do you not hear a sound from the dog or baby?!?! That's MESSED UP right there!!! No way... I don't care if you're cooking over stove, move swing into kitchen. You DON'T leave your baby unattended!!! WTH is wrong with parents!?!? And you all going off about dog... Where is parental & pet owner responsibility!?!? SERIOUSLY!

When is the last time you heard a bully-breed owner say that they knew their dog was vicious. Almost every last one says that their dog NEVER showed any signs of aggression. And I believe them. I don't think these people are negligent dog owners. I think they honestly believe that their sweet Pit would never harm a soul. However, they have been proven wrong too many times to just ignore it. Sure, other dogs bite too. But none with the jaw power of a bully-breed dog. I compare it to being shot with a BB gun as opposed to being shot with a .45 Magnum. One hurts, the other kills. I love dogs. I currently have 4 myself. But IMHO, anyone who owns a bully breed is tempting fate and just begging for trouble.

i see so much distain for pit bulls, any dog can be unpredictable, but like some has said, its not the breed, its the owners of the breed. i have owned 4 pitts, and have NEVER been biten by one of them, but i have been biten my corkies, yorkies, and chichaua's and mostly by chichaua. there is stastics that show that pits do get a bad wrap, and if you read the story, they assummed the dog was a "pit mix". well like my paw paw always said, assuming make an ass out of you and me...assume. as far as putting all pits down, really when is the owner gonna be held responsible for how they train thier pet. i am not saying that my pit will never bite, nor am i saying she will never show aggression, what i am saying is that she was not taught to be aggressive. and the funny thing is she listens better than my child. i can point my finger at her and tell her to go to her house and that is what she does. but as for as things go EVERY dog can bite and every dog can show aggression. so lets just ban all dogs. better yet lets ban all humans for teaching the dogs.

AND COOPERS HAWK....EVERY ANIMAL IS DANGEROUS, IT DOESNT MATTER THE BREED, IT IS IN AN ANIMALS NATURE, THATS WHY THEY ARE ANIMALS....YOU DONT LEAVE A 3 DAY OLD BABY BY THEMSELVES...PERIOD! I HAVE A 10 YEAR OLD AND A 6 YEAR OLD, AND IN MY BETTER JUDGEMENT, MY BULLY IS THEIR BEST FRIEND AND THEIR PROTECTOR.

When are people going to stop anthropomorphizing animals??" my dogs a gentle giant, blah, blah, blah". Heard this so mant times and the dog proceeds to maul a child or react aggressively to innocent victim. Dogs don't think like us- they live on and by instinct alone. Hence, this dog (yes- the breed IS relevant), probably smelled the newborn, didn't recognize it, parents were nowhere around (pure negligence) and there you go- innocent victim

Gawd, do I get tired of idiots. It's not the breed, it really isn't. ANY BREED OF DOG CAN BE VICIOUS. I wouldn't leave any of my dogs alone with a baby, ever. To assume your animal will never do anything unpredictable is ignorance. They are animals, and even if they are the best trained, most socialized animals in the world, you can't predict them entirely. (for the record, I do not own, nor have I ever, owned a pitbull. I have met plenty of sweet ones though, and plenty of nasty dogs of other breeds.)

The Pit Bull breed should be terminated. It's all about the breed. They are so many times the type of dog that makes these sort of attacks. They are deadly animals and no type of training will prevent them from one day reverting back to a killer animal.
