CHIILICOTHE, Ohio (AP) - A central Ohio family has decided to put an end to a long neighborhood tradition after vandals destroyed an elaborate front-yard Christmas light display.

The Hall family has been putting up the display for about three decades, and this year's version featured 30,000 lights. Hundreds of people drove into their Chillicothe-area cul-de-sac to see the show every year.

But vandals hit overnight Saturday, tearing up parts of the display and stealing others.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Halls spent Sunday afternoon taking down what was left of it and have decided to put an end to the tradition.

Mike Hall said he has invested more than $7,000 into Christmas decorations and starts preparing it every October. He said the family considers it a Christmas card to the community.

Thats horrible!!! It is a lot of HARD WORK putting up lights. To get them all to light up alone is a chore. I am so sorry for the Hall family. Hope you all can find another tradition to start within your family to where you all can enjoy.....

Speaking of Christmas traditions, I find it annoying that when I turn to the Christian radio station 93.3 to hear Christmas hymns and carols based on the birth of Christ, I find they are playing mostly secular holiday songs like "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bells". This is a station that plays ONLY Christian music the rest of the year, but somehow they see fit to play secular music at Christmastime.

Such a shame that these folks had to cancel something that has become not only a tradition for them, but I’m sure what has be come a tradition for many other people. My family and I have been making trips to see three local displays for literally my whole life (almost 30 years.) I would be devastated if one of these stopped having their displays. If you must be a nasty Grinch, please don’t ruin it for the rest of us...

Roger, not that the perpetrators deserve it, but the Bible also says to turn the other cheek, love thine enemies, to give gifts in secret, and not to hoard your treasures on earth. It's a shame "stuff" gets in the way of what Christmas is all about.
