Ohio Considering Change in Pit Bull Law

Ohio lawmakers could vote on a major change in the way state law looks at pit bulls and their owners as early as next week. It's called House Bill 14, and Local 12's Rich Jaffe found it could make a big difference to thousands of animals and owners.

People who know and love this breed will tell you the problems with pit bulls are not problems with pit bulls ... they're problems with pit bull owners. Eric Ogletree owns the K9 company in Loveland. He specializes in training pit bulls like Rommel. Ogletree says the breed is not inherently vicious and the biggest mistake pit bull owners make is not socializing the dog. "Not getting the dog out and be able to see different people, kids, tall people, fat, skinny, that's the big issue, other dogs, they don't necessarily have to play with other dogs it's good to have them around other dogs."

In the city of Cincinnati right now you can't legally own a pit bull. Currently in the state of Ohio, any pit bull is considered vicious by law. But Ohio House Bill 14 would make the term vicious or dangerous dog non-breed specific. The S-P-C-A's Harold Dates says the bill makes a lot of sense. Because it treats all dogs the same and it doesn't point out a specific breed as being vicious or dangerous it points out the owners responsibilities with respect to controlling the dog.

Many people consider Cincinnati's law unenforceable. If the state law passes, the city's ban would not have to change, but it could. "Items that you have normally, a knife, baseball bat, automobile, fire arm, there are specific penalties when you do wrong with those. Those penalties are applicable in my opinion to a dog when a dog does severe damage."

Because it's illegal to own a pit bull in Cincinnati, at any given time, there are about 20 pit bulls, potentially on death row at SPCA Cincinnati. Some are involved in court cases, some have been picked up as strays. Ironically, at SPCA Cincinnati's Conrey Road facility, there are pit bulls up for adoption.

Next week the trainers at K9 company are offering a class called Pit Bull Charm School.

Navrat sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about. I bet he has never owned a pitbull, therefore shouldn't judge or comment about something he has no idea about. I have had 2 of these kinds of dogs and they have been the sweetest dogs I have ever owned. Any person I have known that has owned one of these dogs has never had any problem either. Its so sad and pathetic that there are still ignorant people out there that blame this dog breed instead of the owner.

navrat- how dare you. its not the dog. they were made to fight other animals yes but did you know so where american bulldogs and did you know english bulldogs were made to kill bulls did you know that shih tzu's were bred to defend the role blood by attacking anyone that came towards them by hiding in their shirts. did you know that small dogs have a high counts of biting than any other dogs, so westies, schnauzers, shih tzu, maltese, etc have been known to bite more. did you know that most attacks that pitbulls have done have been by children unsupervised, maybe people should start watching their children and figure out what they are doing to the dog before you blame the dog. they are the kindest breed i know, but because when they had enough they bit it does leave a mark but only when you push them to the compelete edge. i rescued a pit bull off the streets a year ago and brought her into my house with my husky they get along perfect. i don't ever worry about her and him.hell my cat sleeps in my pitbulls bed with her. now tell me thats aggressive. so please stop being ignorant. i was bit by a beagle mix when i was younger. but every stray or new pit bull i come up too i never second guess what might happen. i'm more afraid of getting bit by that jack russel at the dog park than the american bulldog, pit bull or any other dog.

Continued from last post: Which gets annoying, but, it doesn't mean she needs to be punished. Animals react differently to different situations. It is up to the owner/caretaker/handler to be responsible for the animal's actions. You don't leave animals outside on a chain for hours on end and expect them to behave. This can make them aggressive and turn on you or someone else. I can't stand people who mistreat animals. Ignorant people have given the APBT a bad reputation. For their own selfish desires and greed, these dogs have been put through hell and back for nothing. For some money or street credability? A life filled with pain and suffereing so you can make big money? People who do this to animals are going to rot in hell. All of God's creatures should be treated with love and respect. Dogs are a sometimes life-long commitment. If you aren't willing to put in the effort to socialize, love and train your dog properly, then you SHOULD'NT HAVE ONE. I've been attacked by a dog before. A dog that's breed I have not been around before. It was a Cardigan Welsh Corgi(these are the Corgis with long tails). I had to have 18 stitches in my left leg. These dogs are known to be protective and aggressive and not too fond of children. This happened when I was about 6 years old; (neglect is due to my parent and the dog owner). This incident did not make me fearful or hate dogs. In fact, Corgi's are one of my favorites now! :D Most if not all incidents or attacks can be avoided if you use common sense and intelligence. You are obviously lacking both of these qualites.

Wow the ignorance of humans is vast. It's funny how you generalize the breed. I have a 1 year old american pitt bull terrier. Best dog I have ever had. Yes he attacks. With kisses! Apparently you know nothing about dogs and you are going by what everyone tells you instead of researching anything for yourself. Mindless sheep. This breed of dog is one of the most loving, loyal, and hard-working dogs there are.Hence being called the "Nanny Dog". Some of the reasons why dogs attack: being starved to death; being fearful; protecting theirselves. If you really want to get down to it. Seriously? Where in the hell are these children's parents while this is happening to them? I believe most if not all cases of dog attacks can be avoided with common sense. Dog attacks are not the dog's fault. They are the owner/handler's fault. Yes it is true that some of these dogs are bred for fighting. WHICH I AM HIGHLY AGAINST! No animal should ever have to go through that kind of torture or mistreatment. It's horrendous. Anyone who does that to their animals should be ashamed. It is also true that some pitt bulls are bred for show; mine is. There are people out there that are trying to breed the "gameness" out of these beautiful animals. So as to try and completely eradicate the nasty misconceptions of these ignorant fearful people. I think it's wonderful. Another thing. I would never let my daughter around a dog that I didn't know. Even if you do know the dog or the owner, NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED AROUND ANY DOG OR ANIMAL FOR THAT MATTER. It's common sense people! I have three dogs. A border collie australian sheperd mix, a mini australian sheperd, and an american pitt bull terrier. Guess which one has aggression issues? The mini aussie. Being the RESPONSIBLE pet owner that I am, I DO NOT take her around small children (outside of my home) or people that she doesn't know. She is very jealous of me petting or talking to my other dogs. Which gets annoying, but, it doesn't me

Oh..... And the only dogs I've ever been bitten by because of aggression have been the cute, fluffy little ones... And I wouldn't want their breeds banned...

Micsmms3 - 1/18/2012 1:46 PM
Goooo Ohio! The breed of dog is not the problem- it is the owner--- please Ohio, use intelligence and compassion and the right decisions will be before you! I love my PB, by the way..... Best goofy, loving, snuggler & best friend I could ever imagine!!!!

I have been a pitbill owner for 3 years. My two dogs started obedience training at 8 weeks of age and socialized with kids, adults and other dogs. I absolutely LOVE my pitties &I would never own another breed They are the most loyal and loving dogs I have ever owned. Punish irresponsible owners, not a whole breed.

@ navrat, grow up :) and do your research. Did you know dachshund (weinie dog) fail more temperament tests then any other dogs? They're also considered to be the most vicious dogs. Ever wonder why pitbulls are used for dog fighting and turned mean? 'Cause they're so smart and loyal to their owners, it's in their nature to please their owners and they do, unfortunately there's bad people out there so the pit gets a bad wrap but it's the HUMANS faults. Also I blame the media, IF a pitbull bites for whatever reason it makes the news, but no one came and did an article over the boarder collie that chased down my 10 year old cousin and bit her leg causing her to have to get stitches. I have a 2 year old pitbull that my SIX year old lays on and pulls her tails and ears and she does nothing not even growl. It's the owners, to ban a dog for being a good pet is just down right ridiculous and it's about time Ohio is realizing this.
