From CBS News, Michelle Castillo

A Chinese restaurant was ordered closed by the health department after an inspector discovered road kill inside the the kitchen.

The Red Flower Chinese Restaurant in Willamsburg was shut down after the owner's son admitted that he had picked up a dead deer on Interstate 75 and brought it back to the business, CBS affiliate WYMT-TV in Hazard, Ky. reported.

The owner told Paul Lawson, the environmental health inspector in Whitley County, that the meat was for his family, not the customers. Lawson said it was the craziest thing he had seen.

"They said they didn't know that they weren't allowed to. So that makes me concerned. But maybe they could have before. They didn't admit to doing it before," he said.

Lawson was called after customers called in to complain that they had seen an animal carcass being brought into the restaurant.

Katie Hopkins told WYMT that she was one of the people who called the health department. She said she was eating the lunch buffet when she saw two workers pushing a garbage can with a box on top of it. Hanging from it was a tail, a foot and a leg. The employees wheeled it right into the kitchen.

"Many people eat there. A lot of locals eat there on lunch breaks and stuff. It was very disturbing. There was actually a blood trail that they were mopping up behind the garbage can," Hopkins explained.

Tonya Thacker told WYMT she was eating lunch as well when she noticed the deer bring brought in. She ran next door and threw up.

"I don't think I'll ever eat Chinese food ever again," she said.

Lawson added that the restaurant can reopen if they pass another health inspection and can prove they have washed, rinsed and sanitized the restaurant. The restaurant will not face any fines.

WYMT spoke to the owner of the restaurant, but due to a language barrier could not confirm if they were planning to reopen.

Lee62 - 10/2/2012 8:03 PM - You got that right and it is easy...and you don't have to go out and hunt/drag in your own road-kill! YUCK! Glad, if I did eat out, I USED to always go for the veggie-stuff, ie: vegetable lo-mein, mixed veggies...whew!

THOSE THERE FOREIGN FOLKS NEED TO LEARN THEM SOME AMERICAN LANGUAGE! Who cares if African people want to speak in their native tongue when they are in another country. OK, so there are multiple problems with this story. If you have not ever been to Hazard it is quite an experience. I have been many times and I don't trust the McDonald's, let alone some Chinese Buffet. Why do you think that lunch buffet is $4.99? You think that is USDA beef and real crab? There isn't anything wrong with deer. I've personally seen a deer hit by a car and asked to take it home. Saved me a trip to the deer stand. When the world goes to hell and the grocery stores stop providing your pretty packaged steaks, then what are you going to do? I'm gonna be eating me some dead Bambi with Wang Chung down in Hazard.

Wow! The story was entertaining, but the comments made my day! I'm not sure which closed-minded people I'm more entertained by. Don't get me wrong - I'm intrigued by the people who are swearing off an entire continent of food because of the actions of one family. But I thik the best is the guy who says, "PEOPLE NEEDS TO LEARN OUR LANGUAGE". I just can't stop laughing! I'll let you figure out the irony of that on your own. And I'm just going to go out on a limb here and guess that you won't be moving to Africa and learning Swahili any time soon. After all, it's much better to stay in your small town and never have to open your mind to anything new.

Chenoosesmom, THAT'S what the problem IS, they DON'T have to learn the laguage and they STILL get what ever they want. And I don't eat deer meat either, but coming from Kentuky I guess the road kill could've been something alot worse.
