NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - It's no lion -- just a big pooch with an unusual doggie hairdo.

Police in Norfolk, Virginia, report getting a call about a lion on the loose.

But it was just Daniel Painter's Labradoodle named Charles the Monarch.

The pooch has a cut that looks like a lion's shaggy mane and is the color of a big cat.

The Virginian-Pilot reports police even called the Norfolk Zoo to make sure their two lions were in their cages. They were. Painter jokes that he tells people his dog is a "lab-a-lion."

Cute might just cause the demise of this dog. I hope they let his hair grow back out.

Looks like a creature from Narnia come to life! Like others, I hope the dog doesn't become a victim of mistaken identity. Best wishes to owner and dog.

Beautiful dog, but I'd be afraid someone would shoot him thinking he's a real lion.

Quite the resemblance to a lion , I must admit...I hope this guy keeps this dog under positive control;ie, leash, fencing etc...I'd hate to hear that the dog had been killed by someone who "truly" thought this was a real lion, about to attack their children playing in their own yard...The dusk to twilight hours can play tricks on you..(esp if you've had a couple)...The dog is kinda neat looking though...
