A woman who identifies herself as the stepmother of an 11-month-old Butler County baby who died overnight says the child got into blood pressure medication before falling ill.  The child, identified by the stepmother as "Gerald", died at Atrium Medical Center.   The coroner also says the child ingested blood pressure medication.

Middletown Police said that hospital officials contacted them early Tuesday morning to let them know the circumstances of the case.

The mother told police she found her child crawling and pills spilled out on the kitchen floor of her apartment at the Trail Bridge Apartment complex, located on Lafayette Avenue. Keisha Callahan, who identifies herself as the child's stepmother, says she was at the apartment when the child was discovered on the floor. She says the boy got into blood pressure medication and by her count, may have swallowed as many as 50 pills.

Callahan says she and some other family members attempted to make the child vomit the pills up and then drove the baby to the Atrium Medical Center.  The child died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The mother's other three children were also taken to Atrium Medical Center as a precaution. Officials say at least two of the children appeared to be fine and have no medication in their systems.

Police say no charges have yet been filed-but they continue questioning witnesses.

CornDog, the ages of the other children was reported on the television news. I agree with your comments. I see nothing wrong with having a lot of kids. But I definitely feel that the horse (marriage, education, job) should come well before starting a large family, for the sake of the kids who have to endure a situation they did not create....

Davmoses 6/27 12:59PM, I agree with your point in general but, unless WKRC redacted some of this story I don't see the ages of the other children. For this story, I say this is a horrible accident, allbeit one that could have very easily been avoided by relocating the medicine, childproofing your cabinets, etc. Now if the mom does have four children in a 3 year range, that my friends is a recipe for a chaotic, under-attentive mess.

I feel that we are always judging, The only one that will judge this young women is God! The girl that said she was the stepmother is no more the baby's daddy girlfriend! A real women would pray for the mother that just lost one of her children, yes she had more than one child but if we look back in time most of the mothers in the 40's and 50's was young mothers, the only difference now is there is no father with a shot gun making these boy marry the girl's. I will pray that these two young people who has lost there son will make It through this storm! God bless the child R.I.P Gerald

To the family I can't even begin to know what this feels like! I am so sorry for your loss, God will show you the way!. It sickens me to read such horrible comments of the oh so perfect people! As a mother we do need to watch our children all the time! But it only takes a blink of an eye for our world to spiral out of control. Would you tell a mother whos child was kidnapped: she was horrible and a bad mom for this happening?? Would you tell a family its their fault that their child drowned? Would you tell a father it his fault his child was murdered? Wow how quickly people are quick to judge!! Matt. 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." & "He that is without sin, cast the first stone" John 8:7. And for those of you who write comments and don't even have a child: HOW CAN YOU EVEN PUT YOURSELF IN THIS FAMILIES SHOES!! Everyone who has wrote such horrible comments need to let some of their own skeletons out of their closet and see what it feels like to be treated so horribly! May God be with this family at their time of sorrow! Rest in Peace little one!

Why do people become so damn sensitive and defensive when people express their OPINION about a subject that most people believe is very important- OUR CHILDREN ? This is not to bash any one single person, it is however about people who keep making what you all want to call an "accident" that keeps killing these defenseless babies who have nobody else to look to for help except their parent's. It is not about race, financial status or where your from. It is about using common sense when you decide to start having children, it doesn't matter how many you have it's about paying attention to the needs of those you bring into the world and making sure that they are SAFE!!! I never read anything on here where ANYONE claimed that they were perfect there are no perfect people but if you are an adult you should be able to handle a simple open public forum where you can discuss whatever subject you want to discuss without people trying to make it seem like a personal attack.

I try to stay away from commenting on these stories but I feel this was an incredibly unfortunate mistake. I am not gonna bash anyone on this one.

We don't know all the facts, but it doesn't look good. Yes, 11-month olds are curious and capable, that's why you make it as difficult as possible for them to get to the medication as possible. I don't believe in "tasty" medicine. It just makes the kids want it more, especially when they don't need it. Making medication tasty makes life easier for the parent. My three month old has changed my life 180 degrees in a better way, even if it means giving up fishing or getting work done on time. Parenthood is meant to be difficult. Giving up those guilty pleasures is part of the job description as far as I'm concerned.

Raising a 3, 2,11 month and 1 month old child in the same household would be challenging if their parents were married, well financed, and had every possible advantage. To have kids in rapid fire succession without a marriage and the money to support them is extremely selfish in my opinion. It creates misery for the children with the extra challenges they will face, and spends tax dollars first feeding them, then dealing with the issues these children face as they grow up in the system. I wish someone would put an end to this tax payer sponsored misery....

i come across an article that says it all- i always wondered "why the ugly comments?" when a mother made a deadly (but unintentional) mistake that caused the death of her child. if the ugliness seems puzzling to you, it doesnt to psychologists who have examined this. its a form of denial, they say: deep down, people understand that all lives are fragile, that we are capable of momentary mistakes or misjudgments that could destroy us. we dont want to face this terrifying fact, so we must convince ourselves that people to whom it happens are unlike us. to sustain our delusion of safety, we must make them monsters.
