The search is over for the man who disappeared in the murky waters of the Great Miami River on Tuesday night. The body of 22-year-old Donald Chesnut was located 300 yards south of where he was last seen around 7:15 this morning.
Family members say Chesnut was with three friends, just south of the low-level dam when he hit a drop off and went under. Relatives said Chesnut yelled for help, but friends couldn’t get to him in the swift moving river. His mother said he could swim.
Sonar units from boats and Infra-red units on helicopters helped in the search. Recovery efforts continued yesterday morning with crews searching the water and around the banks.
Sheriff Richard Jones released the following comment, "The river is a very dangerous place to be, full of areas with drop-offs and swift currents. On one hand, I am happy that the recovery effort may help to bring some closure to the family, but at the same time I am saddened that what might have seemed to be a simple walk in the river has had such tragic consequences."
