Medical Edge: Bat Couple

Updated: Friday, May 9 2014, 05:39 PM EDT
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- The Cincinnati Reds are celebrating moms this Sunday with a special honorary "bat couple."

It's a tradition now almost as celebrated as the peanuts and cracker jacks at the ball park.  For the past few years, Major League Baseball has celebrated Mothers Day Weekend with the help of an honorary bat girl.  Hundreds are nominated, all are breast cancer survivors selected with the help of your votes.  This year however, that bat girl is a bat couple!  A couple living the dream, they say.  They own West Shore Pizza in Mason.

Part of the reason this dream means so much is that they've been able to build it in spite of the fact that they are both breast cancer survivors.  Which is why Patty Stump and Mike Shroder are the first ever Major League Baseball honorary bat couple.

Patty Stump said, "It's such an honor, it's amazing!"

Mike was diagnosed in November of 2006.

Patty told Local 12's Liz Bonis, "I was diagnosed a year and a week later in 2007 and then again in 2011."

Patty says there's good and bad to knowing what you are getting into based on your husbands experience.

"I kept telling myself it was very treatable and he had come through it with flying colors," she said.

Mike simply found a bump on his chest he thought was an ingrown hair, "About three weeks later we were home and got into bed one night and I noticed that thing is still there.  From there I had the mammogram and the whole nine yards and they came in and said you have breast cancer."

Both can't wait to be on the field Sunday before the game as part of the honorary bat girl ceremony.

But Mike has already told 'em, "I'd wear pink but I wont wear something that says 'bat girl'!"

Their message is a simple one.  Patty says, "I think it's just that breast cancer affects almost everyone you know in some way.  If it's not you or your sister or mother or brother it's someone that you work with."

As for what Mike's looking forward to most, he said, "I think watching her!"

The Reds play the Rockies at 1:10p.m. at Great American Ball Park.
