A well-executed theme turns an ordinary gathering into an exciting event. Depending on the subject matter, themes can be equally successful for elegant parties or casual outdoor get-togethers. Some popular topics include hobbies, careers, seasons, time periods, ethnic cultures, literature, famous movies, and even colors. You might base your theme on the time of year, for example, using leaves, pumpkins and other imagery during the autumn. Or you could do something unexpected, like throwing a Hawaiian luau in the winter, complete with tiki torches. To set the tone, you'll need a good name for your event...and a great invitation. These two items can do more to sell your event than you might imagine. Avoid cliched event names; you can look to others for inspiration, but be careful not to infringe on someone else's copyrighted idea. Once a logo is chosen, use the same typeface and graphics on all print materials. When decorating the site, get creative. Think of fun ways to illustrate your theme, and establish the proper mood. Pay special attention to music, lighting, and major props, but don't overlook the smaller details. Having the wait staff dress in appropriate costume is always a nice touch.
