If your fiance did not ask your parents for your hand, then they should be the first to know about your engagement. If your parents live nearby and know your fiance, it is best for the two of you to tell them in person. If they do not live nearby, then call them and tell them together. Try to make arrangements for them to meet your fiance as soon as possible, if they have not already met. Discuss the wedding arrangements in detail with all family members as far in advance as possible. State how you would like the family members to participate, who will be in attendance, and if necessary, what your expectations are. Unfortunately, a family member can elect not to participate in the wedding if he or she is uncomfortable with the arrangements or other family members. You should accept such a decision and reassure the relative that you would like to include him or her whenever possible. For more information on etiquette and family considerations, consult a bridal consultant in your area.
