Rough play or accidents can chip or knock out your child's baby or permanent teeth. Whenever a tooth is damaged, it's a good idea to see a dentist as quickly as possible. Some chips or breaks don't hurt, but it's still best to consult a professional. When a baby tooth is knocked out, you won't need to take the tooth to the dentist If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up carefully by the hard, enamel part, called the crown. Avoid touching the roots, because they're fragile. You can rinse the tooth under gently running water, but don't scrub it. If possible, place the tooth back in it's socket. Otherwise, wrap the tooth in plastic wrap or place it in milk to protect the root. Contact a dentist immediately. Most dentists will treat patients in the evening for emergencies, and they'll advise you on the best course of action until you can be treated. When filling out your child's emergency contact card for your childcare provider, you may want to include the name of your dentist.
