Though a school's primary focus should be on learning, you'll also want to take note of the recreation facilities they provide. Children, especially young ones, need some time to burn off energy, or just relax in a less demanding pastime. A kindergarten should have plenty of educational toys, games, and props for playing make-believe. Outside, the playground should be safe, with equipment in good condition. Is there enough room, and enough equipment for all the children, or are many forced to wait in line? The recreation facilities at elementary schools should be similar, but with more advanced activities, like art, music or drama rooms. Check out the sports facilities as well, for both boys and girls. Are playing fields and tracks well-kept? Is there a pool, and if so, is it clean? Visit the gym, and look at the locker rooms. For shared facilities, do the girls have equal access, or do boys always get first choice? Finally, evaluate other recreational activities offered, based on your child's interests. The school may have a band, a theater, photography lab, class newspaper, or even their own radio station. Activities like these are not only fun, but can teach valuable skills.
