Sometime during grade school, your child is likely to encounter anti-drug education. These programs typically occur in the later grades, though this varies according to what size town you live in, and your school's particular policy. Children might learn about the different categories of drugs, like stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens, and which drugs are the most addictive. In addition to material presented by the teacher, children may hear guest speakers from the local police department, or drug enforcement agencies. Sometimes they'll see a film, or even be shown actual drug samples and paraphernalia. When choosing a school, ask whether they teach children about the effects and dangers of drugs and alcohol. It's never a bad idea to discuss these issues at home, too...but do it in the form of casual conversations, not a formal lecture. You can also help your kids avoid problems with drugs by fostering their confidence and self-esteem as they grow up. Give them practice in making their own decisions throughout life, and try to build strong family bonds. Children who feel isolated, with few emotional ties to their families are more likely to give in to peer pressure regarding drugs.
