Making ice candles requires lots of hands-on participation of an adult, but it's usually a hit with children. You'll need a small tin can, candle wax, some crushed ice, a popsicle stick, wick string, a small sauce pan, and wax dye if desired. First, cut the wick and tape an end of it to the inside bottom of the can. Second, place the stick across the top of the can, draping the length of string over it. Tie the other end to the popsicle stick. The wick shouldn't have any slack in it. For the third step, put about a quarter of an inch of ice into the bottom of the can. Melt the wax in the sauce pan, coloring it with special wax dye, if you desire. Finally, pour the wax into the tin can. As the wax sets, the ice will melt, leaving the top of the candle with an interesting texture. To remove the candle from its mold, try briefly dipping the tin can into hot water. Coating the can with non-stick cooking spray before adding the wax may help, too. Have fun!
