Any child can be an author of a book, even the smaller kids who can't yet write can create picture books. You can help your younger children by suggesting some themes. For example, how about a picture book called 'Foods I Like to Eat' or maybe 'My Animal Book?' Those books can be made with pictures cut out of magazines or drawn by the children. Older kids will probably want to come up with their own stories and draw the illustrations. This creative project not only enhances their story-telling and drawing skills, but it can reveal their interests in subjects such as nature or science. Once the pages of the book are complete, there are many ways to bind it. Stapling pages is fast and easy. For a pretty look, punch three holes on the side of the papers and thread a piece of yarn through each of the holes to tie into bows. Or you can buy report covers like high school students use to turn in term projects. If you have an old notebook binder, your child can put the pages in the binder, and then cover the binder by gluing on fabric. If the project is a hit, you may have several wonderful presents for grandparents.
