In elementary school classrooms, there are frequently labels on all of the objects in the room. This game is a version of the classrom practice, and can be adapted for elementary school children or preschoolers. If your kids are in the early grades, this game can readily help them with reading and spelling. Sit down with your child and start naming different objects and colors in a room. As you name them, you should write the words down on slips of paper. For example, you might write the words ‘bed,' ‘sofa,' ‘chest,' ‘closet,' ‘rug,' and ‘toy box' on the paper or three-by-five index cards. Then let your child tape the words to the appropriate objects. For preschoolers, cut pictures of household objects out of catalogs and write the first letter of the word on the picture. For example, write a ‘B' on a picture of a bed and an ‘S' on a picture of a sofa. Then your little one can tape the pictures on the objects and learn the sounds of the alphabet at the same time. As words and sounds are mastered, you may want to create a notebook of the old cards. Your child might enjoy reviewing past successes, and it may also encourage future efforts.
