Even an afternoon of errands can seem endless when children are bored with riding in the car. Here are a few games to help pass the time. The first is license plate alphabet. The object of the game is to find each letter of the alphabet, in order, on passing cars' license plates. This can be a group effort, where every child works on the same alphabet, or a competition in which each player searches individually. Here's an idea for longer road trips, especially those taken on major highways. Children can search for license plates from different states, writing down each state they spot. This works best as a group effort, to keep the competition friendly. Here's a game beginning readers might enjoy. Place magnetic letters on cookie sheets for your children to make words with. Since the magnets keep the small pieces attached to the tray, there's less chance of mess. Need something to entertain all ages during road trips? Visit your local library and check out a book on cassette to play in your car's tape player. You'll find classic tales as well as best-selling novels.
