In the fifteen years or so since pot-bellied pigs came to America, they've become popular pets. They're much like dogs, in that they can be housebroken, walked on a leash, and taught tricks. Unlike the stereotypical mud-wallowing farm pigs, pot-bellies are naturally clean and odor-free. Daily grooming with a soft brush and occasional hoof trimming are all that's required. Male pigs may need to have their tusks trimmed occasionally. Vaccinations for piglets should be given at six weeks of age, with boosters at nine weeks and six months, then annually. Your vet will know the shots to give. Unless you plan to breed your pig, you should plan on having it spayed or neutered when it's four months old. This will make it less likely to stray. Before you start looking for a pet pig of your own, be sure you have room for it. That cute, squirming little piglet will eventually weigh well over a hundred pounds.
