Heart disease is one of the most frequent problems seen in veterinary medicine. Because heart problems can also result in poor circulation, high blood pressure and even heart failure, special attention should be paid to treating a pet with this disease. There are various forms of heart disease. The most common signs of a problem include coughing at night or after exercise, breathing difficulties, a bulging abdomen, weight loss, and an inability to exercise. The diagnosis of heart disease is made by a veterinarian using radiograph and electrocardiogram findings. A heart murmur can also suggest a heart condition. Because most cases are non-reversible, treatment usually involves relieving the symptoms and slowing the disease's progression. A special diet, diuretics and medication may all be prescribed. The causes of heart disease vary, but guarding against heartworm and periodontal disease as well as regular veterinary examinations can all help protect a dog or cat. For more information on heart disease in pets consult a veterinarian.
