An eight year old has learned he did not set the record for catching the largest carp in Ohio. The fish he reeled in Monday afternoon at the Newtown gravel pit weighed in at 53.5 pounds.
Josh Cobb and dad were using leeches and hot dogs as bait. Josh says he felt something tugging at his line harder than usual. Josh only weighs about 66 pounds. But his dad made him reel it in so it would be considered his catch.
Josh and his dad took the fish to Xenia Wednesday to be certified. The Ohio Division of Wildlife says the fish is a grass carp - not a common carp - so it doesn't count as a record.
The Cobb's usually catch and release but considering the size of this fish, they decided to donate it. Josh says the key to catching a big fish is picking the right bait and picking the holes where the fish like to hide.
