A married couple in their 60s drowned Monday while apparently trying to rescue their dog from a Massachusetts pond.

It happened in the town of Westfield.

Authorities said the 64-year-old husband and 61-year-old wife were crossing a pond in their pontoon boat when their small dog jumped off the boat.

State Police said preliminary reports indicate the man entered the water to retrieve the dog.

The man became distressed while trying to reach the dog.  The woman then jumped in trying to help.

The dog survived.

The couple's name is not yet being released.
