Sources for new pets can include animal shelters, pet shops, animal breeders, newspaper ads, friends and neighbors, and sometimes animal hospitals who have abandoned pets looking for a home. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages as a pet supplier. Animal shelters offer a chance to save a life. Usually, these animals are put to sleep if not adopted. Pet shops offer a variety of animals and accept credit card purchases. Breeders offer pedigrees and usually can tell you who the pet's parents are. Newspaper ads offer a bit of each and, finally, it is hard to beat the cost of a free pet from a friend or neighbor. The key to finding a new pet that will best fit your family is to give serious thought to the subject. Find out about the personalities, sizes, feeding costs, shedding factors, and so forth for the kind of pet you are considering. Libraries are excellent resources for this information, as are breeders and veterinarians. Remember that you will be with this pet for many years, so saving money and time now becomes a rather small factor over the life of your pet. For additional information, consult a veterinarian or pet supplier.

In Ohio, all dogs over three months of age must be registered (licensed) with the county auditor. The licensing of any dog residing in Hamilton County can be completed by using this mail-in form or by visiting any one of a number of convenient licensing agents. If you and your pet live outside of Hamilton County, please contact your local auditor's office for information.

Dog licensing is much more than a law you need abide by. The tags and the identification number they contain could also help return your prized pet to you should he or she become lost!
