The safest way to take your dog on a long trip is in a crate, or pet carrier. The enclosed space soothes the dog's natural instincts for a small, safe, den. You may also want to consider using a doggie seat belt, available at most pet stores, to secure your dog for short trips in the car. Make sure you walk the dog before the trip, and plan on occasional stops for exercise. Don't feed the dog too much before the trip as a safeguard against carsickness, and bring along plenty of paper towels just in case of an accident. Don't forget to bring your own water, either from your tap at home or distilled from the store. Different areas have water supplies that can upset your dog's stomach. Finally, bring food, treats, and toys to keep your dog happy. Traveling by air demands even more planning. Read the airline's brochures to make sure exactly what their policies are regarding the transportation of pets. The same goes for your destination site. Some places don't allow pets to be brought in at all. Others will have certain restrictions. Make sure you know what these are before you begin. You and your pet will benefit from this advance planning.

In Ohio, all dogs over three months of age must be registered (licensed) with the county auditor. The licensing of any dog residing in Hamilton County can be completed by using this mail-in form or by visiting any one of a number of convenient licensing agents. If you and your pet live outside of Hamilton County, please contact your local auditor's office for information.

Dog licensing is much more than a law you need abide by. The tags and the identification number they contain could also help return your prized pet to you should he or she become lost!
