The key to housebreaking a dog is to remember that a dog is eager to please you. When he does his business in the right place at the right time, be sure to praise him. If the puppy makes a mistake, and he will, scold but don't hit. And never, ever, rub the dog's nose in it. The dog will try to clean its nose by licking it. Puppies normally want to go right after they eat, so schedule a walk after every meal, as well as before bedtime and the first thing in the morning. Once the dog does his business, praise him, then walk him some more. Dogs love to go outside, and if they associate going to the bathroom with going back in, they'll learn to hold it longer, just to prolong the experience. If you have a small dog, you might prefer to paper train. This is simple enough. Enclose the puppy in an area covered with paper. He'll soon find a favorite corner to go in. Gradually decrease the amount of paper until only that one spot remains. Voila! You've housebroken your new puppy.

In Ohio, all dogs over three months of age must be registered (licensed) with the county auditor. The licensing of any dog residing in Hamilton County can be completed by using this mail-in form or by visiting any one of a number of convenient licensing agents. If you and your pet live outside of Hamilton County, please contact your local auditor's office for information.

Dog licensing is much more than a law you need abide by. The tags and the identification number they contain could also help return your prized pet to you should he or she become lost!
