The increasing use of commercially-prepared foods instead of table scraps has greatly improved the nutrition of dogs and cats, but care should be taken to chose the brand best suited to your pet. In addition, a pet's nutritional needs change as it grows and these changes should be considered when planning a well-balanced, nutritional diet for your animal. The guidelines for puppy and kitten nutrition include a veterinary-recommended commercial food, plenty of fresh water, and no meals or treats of table scraps. Many experts recommend that food not be left available all day, as this can encourage overeating. Adult dogs and cats should switch to a maintenance-type diet. This should consist of two or more daily meals of commercial foods designed especially for full-grown animals. In addition, special care should be taken to curb the diet of overweight pets and supplement the diet of pregnant ones. For more information on pet nutrition and care, consult a veterinarian in your area.
