There are many ways to prepare for the arrival of a new puppy. Once the puppy is weaned and you have brought it home, be sure that it has adequate warmth and a dry place to sleep. You can make a bed in a clean carton or box lined with newspapers and padded with something soft. Place a warm water bottle that is unbreakable and a ticking clock in the box to soothe your puppy. If you have small children, it is a good idea to monitor any playing with the puppy until the child understands the correct way to handle the animal. This will lessen the risk of injury to either the puppy or child. Because puppies will want to chew on things as they gain new teeth, keep electric cords and small, sharp, or splintering objects out of reach. Handle puppies gently. Like children, they are fragile and need special care. It is a good idea to accustom your puppy to confinement early, whether this be in the house or yard. Roaming animals can easily be hit by cars. If your puppy will be living in the house, you should begin housebreaking as soon as possible. There are many books available on the various methods of training. In Ohio, all dogs over three months of age must be registered (licensed) with the county auditor. The licensing of any dog residing in Hamilton County can be completed by using this mail-in form or by visiting any one of a number of convenient licensing agents. If you and your pet live outside of Hamilton County, please contact your local auditor's office for information.

Dog licensing is much more than a law you need abide by. The tags and the identification number they contain could also help return your prized pet to you should he or she become lost!
