Single-sex schools are another option, when selecting a school for your child. Though most public schools are co-ed, some private elementary schools still offer a single-sex environment. This may be advantageous, especially for girls. Studies of the public school system have revealed that girls tend to experience almost unconscious discrimination, in the form of less attention from teachers, textbooks that stereotype women, fewer athletic opportunities, and tests that are biased toward boys. At a single-sex school, girls often escape these limitations, and have a better chance to grow academically. Single-sex schools have other benefits for both boys and girls. Typically, they provide a less distracting atmosphere, in which students can more easily concentrate on learning. Students have strong role models of their own gender, and are less likely to experience peer pressures. However, some parents question the choice of a single-sex school, believing that children should have social contact with the opposite gender. Typically, this does take place on the weekends, when co-ed activities are arranged with a nearby school. For more information, contact a single-sex school in your area.
